How a Heart Changes
Every heart carries a little of all three patterns: Guarded, Conflicted and Reserved. The HeartFormed framework shows the path God follows through each one, by the virtue He works, to the fruit that grows, and into a whole heart. Hover over or tap any circle to explore.
Every heart carries a little of all three
Guarded, Conflicted and Reserved are not boxes to sort yourself into. Most people lean toward one in a given season, and all three show up at times. Choose a pattern to watch the path God works through it, or hover over any circle to preview it.
Faith, Hope and Love are what God does. Grace, Peace and Belonging are the fruit that grows.
“Is anything truly good or safe?”
You let people in, then watch for the moment it goes wrong. This heart wants to trust and cannot quite let itself.
God is good, even when you expect the worst.
“Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!”Psalm 107:1 (ESV)
“What if this doesn’t turn out okay?”
Some days you hold everything together by sheer effort. Other days you are tired of trying. This heart feels pulled between striving and rest.
You don’t have to hold together what God already holds.
“And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”Colossians 1:17 (ESV)
“How close is too close?”
You hand people the parts of yourself that feel safe to give and keep the rest. This heart holds back its deepest parts because offering them has felt too risky.
You are fully known and fully loved by God, even when you want to pull away.
“O Lord, you have searched me and known me!”Psalm 139:1 (ESV)
Faith
Faith is what God does as you turn toward Him: cleansing what shame has covered. It is never a technique you perform.
“and he made no distinction between us and them, having cleansed their hearts by faith.”Acts 15:9 (ESV)
Grace
Grace grows from faith: receiving what you cannot earn. It answers the Guarded Heart’s question. Yes, something is safe, and He has proven it.
“but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”Romans 5:8 (ESV)
Hope
Hope is what God does to anchor what anxiety has unsettled. It gives your soul something to hold while the outcome is still unknown.
“We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain,”Hebrews 6:19 (ESV)
Peace
Peace grows from hope. It settles the constant calculating and brings together what has been pulled apart. It is given, never achieved.
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”John 14:27 (ESV)
Love
Love is what God does as He draws near to what fear has kept at a distance. He takes root in the places you have kept to yourself.
“so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,”Ephesians 3:17–18 (ESV)
Belonging
Belonging is what the Reserved Heart finds once it lets itself be fully known. It grows from love, and the place was prepared before you arrived.
“So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,”Ephesians 2:19 (ESV)
Wholeness
A whole heart has still been wounded, sometimes deeply. What makes it whole is a growing ability to receive what God gives, let it take root, and bear fruit even in a hard season. It shows up as joy that holds steady, humility that does not need to be noticed, and mercy that stays in the room.
This is a direction you keep turning toward. It is never a finish line you failed to reach.
“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”Philippians 1:6 (ESV)
Worship
All of it happens inside worship. Change comes as the heart’s devotion is redirected toward the One who is actually worthy of it. The virtues are what God does, and the fruit is what grows.
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”Romans 12:1 (ESV)
